2025 RSVP Conference

"Voices and Visions"

The Research Society for Victorian Periodicals (RSVP) will hold its annual conference in Downtown Chicago, on July 10-12, 2025. RSVP invites submissions on the conference theme of “Voices and Visions.” Periodicals provided a platform for an enormous range of voices and visions throughout the nineteenth century. This year’s conference will explore the dynamic interplay between the diverse voices featured in newspapers and periodicals and the broader visions that guided these publications. Papers addressing any aspect of nineteenth-century British and colonial periodicals are welcome, but RSVP particularly encourages proposals relating to voices and/or visions.

The full 2025 RSVP CFP can be found on the website.

The Chicago conference will be an in-person event. RSVP remains committed, however, to making our gatherings accessible to as wide a range of members as possible and will continue to experiment with various formats. This year’s two keynote addresses and Annual General Meeting will be transmitted live and will be available free without registration. In addition, we are planning a series of pre-conference Digital Event panels held online on the conference theme on the Fridays leading up to the conference. If you would prefer to present an 8-10 min paper at one of these pre-conference Digital Events, please check the relevant box in the submission portal.

Web Portal Submission Information

  • To propose an individual or co-authored paper for the in-person conference, please submit a proposal (200-300 words) and a biographical note (100 words) for each author. Papers will be 15-20 minutes maximum.
  • To propose a panel for the in-person conference (3 presenters), please submit a panel rationale (200 words), proposals for all presenters (200 words per person), and biographical notes. Each paper will be 15-20 minutes maximum.
  • To propose a roundtable for the in-person conference (5-6 people), please submit a roundtable rationale (300 words) and biographical notes for all participants. Each presenter will speak for 6-7 minutes.
  • To propose an individual paper for one of the pre-conference Digital Event panels, please submit an abstract (200-300 words) and a biographical note (100 words). Papers will be between 8-10 minutes.

For co-authored papers, panels, and roundtables, one person can create an application in the web portal and add other participants as collaborators. Click on the "add collaborators button" on the left side of your application screen to invite others; be sure to grant them "view & edit" privileges so that they can upload their materials (abstracts and/or biographical notes) as part of your application. Please give your collaborators sufficient time to add materials before you submit the complete application on or before November 1st, 2024. For applications that require last-minute additions, there is an automatic two-day grace period.

Once you've started an application, you can view the instructions at any time by clicking on the grey "i" instructions button on the right side of your application view.

Questions about the application process can be directed to the awards administrator at applications@rs4vp.org.
